With the end of this month rapidly nearing, the Transfer Window draws ever closer to its closure, albeit this year the market will be closing on February 2nd. With just a few days to go will there be any last minute excitement? Arsenal are still in with a chance of signing Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin with manager Arsene Wenger stating “we are always confident, we try our best, if we can find an agreement, we will do it.” Meanwhile on the other side of North London, Tottenham who have already purchased Jermain Defoe, Pascal Chimbonda and Wilson Palacios have been linked with numerous other players from across the globe. Depending on which source you believe, Lyon striker Fred, Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz or even Inter’s Adriano may be joining Spurs. Though the rumour currently circulating the gossip columns suggests Harry Redknapp may attempt to bring back another ex-Spurs player in the shape of Robbie Keane. Elsewhere fellow London side Fulham are reportedly searching for Jimmy Bullard’s replacement, Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso is apparently a popular target for various sides and Portsmouth manager Tony Adams is looking to recruit a number of players to bolster his squad. Other columns are wondering will Manchester City choose to splash out? Their astonishing bid for Kaka may have fell through however there are still numerous other world-class players available for £100m plus! We will just have to wait and see what happens in the crazy world of football.

Cristiano Ronaldo collected his first FIFA World Player title while Marta claimed her third successive FIFA Women's World Player award at the 18th FIFA World Player Gala at the Zurich Opera House on Monday evening. Ronaldo had a remarkable 2008, in which he scored 31 goals for Manchester United in the Premier League and propelled his club not only to another league title but also to the UEFA Champions League crown. He performed creditably at international level at UEFA EURO 2008, although Portugal were eliminated in the quarter-finals. Ronaldo reaped 935 points in the vote in which the coaches and captains of 155 national teams took part. Argentina's Lionel Messi finished second (678 points) and was trailed by Spain's Fernando Torres (203), Brazil's Kaká (183) and Spain's Xavi (155). Marta delivered an outstanding performance at the Women's Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing 2008, and equalled the record set by Birgit Prinz by claiming her third consecutive FIFA Women's World Player title. For the women's vote, 139 coaches and captains cast their vote and Marta won comfortably (1,002 points) ahead of Germany's Birgit Prinz (328), Brazil's Cristiane (275), Germany's Nadine Angerer (198) and England's Kelly Smith (150).
