"If all the brains in the game sat in committee to design the perfect player, they would come up with a reincarnation of Tom Finney." Sir Tom Finney was born at home in Preston, on a street next to the Deepdale Stadium. After completing an apprenticeship in plumbing and fighting in World War II, Finney made his debut for his home club Preston. He would play for them for fourteen years making 433 appearances and scoring 187 goals. The “Preston Plumber” as he was nicknamed, also pulled on the Three Lions shirt 76 times and scored 30 times. Having played for Preston all his career, his loyalty is often remarked upon especially considering he was only earning £14 and he rejected an approach from Italian side Palermo who reportedly offered a £10,00 signing on fee. Sir Tom maintains his links with the Deepdale club and now acts as their president. A genuine two-footed player and a master of the ball, Finney was unjustly never rewarded with any silverware.
