TF90M Exclusive Interview with The Fastest Man In The World Usain Bolt
Football Interviews
Written by James Bailey
The first 90 minutes talks exclusively to the hero of the Olympic Games, the world superstar and fastest man on the planet, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt about athletics and football.

The highlight of the Beijing Olympic Games for many was the sight of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt winning both the 100m and 200m in world record times, destroying all competition and in the 100m even celebrating before he crossed the line. Furthermore along with his team mates he added a third gold medal and world record to his summer collection by helping the Jamaican team win the 4x100m relay. Bolt became the first man to win all three events at a single Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984, and the first man in history to set world records in all three at a single Olympics. Unsurprisingly Usain has picked up the nickname “Lightning Bolt.” From a young age, Bolt enjoyed playing sport and despite being promising at both football and cricket, he entered into the world of athletics. At just 22, the world waits in excitement to see what Bolt can produce over the next few years.

Interview:

Firstly Congratulations on your Olympic success, describe the emotions as you crossed the line in both 100m and 200m races?

I was very happy to win the 100m and beat the best runners in the world.  The 200m is close to my heart so to break the world record that was very special for me and something I have been working for my whole life.

Which gold medal meant most to you?

200m - it is close to my heart.

What is the secret behind your success? Do you have any pre-race superstitions?

There are no secrets - only hard work in training.  I don't have any superstitions.

What is your relationship like with the rest of the Jamaican sprinters?

We get on very well.  We are all friends off track but it is everyone for themselves when the business starts on the track.

Who do you see as the main competition in both the 100m and 200m?

There are lots of strong runners.  Asafa Powell ran 9.72 secs in Lausanne.  Tyson Gay is the World 100m & 200m Champion.

What is the quickest time you reckon you could one day set in the 100m?

It is hard to say - I just want to keep winning races.

Some criticised your “showboating” as you crossed the line in the 100m, did you feel that was unfair? We personally would like to see you entertain more-how about dancing over the line?!

I like to entertain the fans who paid money to come and watch us run.  I have received a lot of positive feedback about my celebrations.

How did you feel the Games was organised? What are you expecting from the Olympics in London- some already believe it may not live up to Beijing?

The Olympics in Beijing were excellent.  The stadium was amazing, the track was super fast, the crowd treated me very well.  I am already looking forward to London 2012.

As a youngster you played football, were you any good? Your speed must have helped!

I enjoyed football and cricket when I was younger.

Do you still like football, what team do you support?

I love football - Manchester United and Real Madrid are my teams.  I have been invited to train with Real Madrid and I am looking forward to it.

Who in your opinion is the greatest footballer of all time?

Pele - he gave me a signed shirt in Beijing.

You are friends with Ricardo Fuller who plays for Stoke City; do you ever get to watch the Premier League matches?

I am normally in Europe during the football off season but look forward to watching a few games this winter if I come to Europe for some functions.  I know Ricardo and hope to watch him play soon.

What made you start racing competitively, could you have played any other sports professionally?

I was good at it.  I think I could have been a professional cricketer.

What are your aims for your future?

Stay healthy, work hard and keep winning.

By James Bailey, TF90M thanks Usain for taking time to answer our questions and we look forward to watching him in action.

Football Quotes

Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.
