TF90M Exclusive Interview with Ipswich Town Defender Moritz Volz
Football Interviews
Written by James Bailey

Formerly of Arsenal, the German defender Moritz Volz joined Championship side Ipswich Town on loan from Fulham during the summer transfer window. Despite never appearing for the international side, Volz repeatedly won caps for the U21 team and has been previously selected in the German senior squad. A firm fans favourite, Volz is regularly involved with community involvement and frequently cycled to games at Craven Cottage. Embarking on his season long loan at Portman Road, Moritz talks exclusively to us about his aims, his career and the 15,000th Premiership goal.

You have recently joined Ipswich on loan, what are your aims for this season?

On a personal level I'd like to play as many games as I can at right back and produce good performances - first of all being hard to beat and stopping crosses defending and joining in to support the attack from behind. With the team we want to find a rhythm and play good passing football with lots of movement short term - and promotion at the end of it.

Do you believe there is a vast gap in quality between the Premiership and Championship? Which player do you most fear in the Championship and who was the best player you faced in the Premiership?

There is no doubt a difference, because I don't end up having to mark Ronaldo, Robinho or Downing to name just a few. However the standard is very high in the Championship and there are many good players and teams in the league.

You achieved cult status at Fulham. Are you disappointed you didn’t make more first team starts last season? How frustrating and agonising was it watching the relegation fight from the touchline? How did it feel when Fulham stayed up?

It goes without saying that watching games is difficult when you are fit and ready. The fight against relegation and the pressure and anxiety that comes with that is not pleasant but the relief when we stayed up was enormous and felt like winning a trophy. It's a weird concept but avoiding the drop on the last day felt like a bigger achievement than finishing 9th in my first year even though it isn't at all.

Do you think you can earn a place in the German national squad?

I think I'm a long way away from that at the moment but that can change as soon as the next game, so I haven't given up and probably never will.

You notably scored the 15,000th goal in the Premiership, how did that feel? What is the best goal you have ever scored and what do you think is the best goal of all time?

Having scored in my own net against Charlton recently put that feeling right back into me, not!!!! Scoring makes you lose your mind and is a fulfilling experience but it only last for a few seconds.

Thierry Henry scored one of the best goals ever against Man U at Highbury when he chipped the keeper with a sort of flick and volley from the edge of the box with his back to goal.

TF90M would like to thank Moritz for taking time to answer our questions. We wish him all the best luck for this season and the remainder of his career.
