Has Didier Zokora Finally Started To Win Over His Doubters Among The WHL Faithful?

Since signing from French club Saint-√Čtienne in the summer of 2006, Didier Zokora has been a regular in the Tottenham first team, making over 100 appearances for the North London side though the Ivorian Coast international remains arguably still unable to win over his doubters among the White Hart Lane faithful.

The energetic player, who has showed considerable versatility by playing across the defence and midfield, is often a talking point between Spurs fans and visiting supporters alike. Some love him, most don't rate him. Though what cannot be questioned is his non-stop running, his lightning pace and his determination. The latter partially due to Zokora playing every game for his brother, Armand, who drowned at the beach, at a young age.

Furthermore, the combative midfielder delights the home crowd with his enthusiasm and engine, prompting his own chant to the theme tune of "Lets all do the Conga" with the lyrics "Do-do-do Didier Zokora." Zokora, showing his regard at the club, even captained Spurs in their UEFA Cup fixture versus Getafe, due to the absence of several first team players.

Though the fact that Zokora has failed to score yet for Spurs, illustrates just one of the problems the Spurs fans have with the defensive midfielder. His lacksidasical passing, his sloppy crossing and his inability to shoot combined with the fact he regularly gives away dangerously positioned free kicks depicts why he has yet to convince the supporters he is an able guard to the Spurs backline.

Similar to previous Spurs player Steffen Freund, the fans wish for Zokora to score, however unlike Freund his defensive attributes are not considered to be top quality.

With flair players, Modric, Bentley and Lennon needed to be complemented by a strong enforcer, the signing of Wilson Palacios from Wigan may signal the end of Zokora's run in the first team. Although the tabloids recently reported Spanish giants Real Madrid to be interested in signing Zokora, the move looks unlikely to go through with Lassana Diarra being Juande Ramos' preferred purchase.

Whilst Zokora has had many highlights at White Hart Lane, most notably winning the Carling Cup, Spurs' desire for a strong tackling defensive midfielder seems to have continued whilst the Ivorian has been in North London. A useful squad player perhaps. A first choice midfield maestro, probably not.

Though like numerous players, fans are split. But then of course it is different opinions that make football the game it is.
