Israeli Ligat ha'Al’s runner's up Maccabi Netanya FC are set to face the might of German footballing giants Borussia Mönchengladbach. In a special international challenge match the Israeli team will host will host the Germans in Tel Aviv’s Herzliya Stadium on Saturday, the 14 December 2008.
Lothar Matthäus’ team is likely to be at full strength for a game that will attract a large crowd from across the country. It has also been suggested that the German international footballing legend Lothar Matthäus may take part as a player for Maccabi Netanya FC at some point during the game.
Lothar Matthäus, head coach of Maccabi Netanya said: "We are keen that this game will be a showcase for everything that is positive about football in Israel and international sporting relations. Borussia Mönchengladbach is a legendary team and the history of partnership between the club and Israel dates as far back as the 1960s. It will be a joy to welcome such a prestigious club to Israel and our hope is that thousands of people will share that joy with us."
The “Goals for Peace 2008” international challenge match is designed to promote sport’s place in the development of peace across the world. The initiative could be repeated with some of the word’s other top teams visiting Israel.
