A while ago we previewed the release of “Modern Football Is Rubbish”, now after getting our reading glasses on, reliving football of the past and laughing at length, we bring you our verdict on the book.
Described as “the ideal book for the disillusioned football fan” the paperback is presented in an A-Z format detailing “all that is wrong with ‘the beautiful game.’” The authors, whilst wallowing in nostalgia, cover various topics from past to present, from real life to comic book stories and from playing in the park to playing at Wembley. Trawling through many important issues including the “Forgotten Smells of Football” “Counterfeit World Cups” and “The Curse of the Official Club Calendar” all the ideas cause laugh out loud moments. For the older fan many of the points will evoke childhood memories and possibly make you wish the game remained as it was before the introduction of foreign investment, ridiculous transfer fees and SKY TV. The comical account of modern problems in football does indeed cause you to reflect. Whilst the majority of the book is written in jest, some points do make you think just what has happened to “the beautiful game.”
The book due to its ordered narrative makes it easy just to pick up and put down, then come back to it later. For those of you are not avid book worms, this book is well worth a read and may not only cause a few tears of laughter, a few tears as you wander down memory lane but also a few tears as you think how football has changed perhaps for the worse? After reading the book, you can decide.
