La Liga Latest: David Villa - The Loyal Servant

After his controversial insight into the demise of Real Madrid, our Spanish football correspondent Matt Allen returns this week to give us his thoughts on Spanish striker David Villa.

Last summer was full of transfer speculation; it seemed no player was happy with his club.  Cristiano Ronaldo, the so called “slave”, sulked all summer and demanded a move to Real Madrid.  Ronaldo was lured by the big money on offer, rumoured to be around £300,000 per week… fortunately for United fans the deal didn’t materialize.  Robinho moved to Manchester City from Real Madrid on the transfer deadline day and became a richer man for it.

Valencia massively underachieved last season and finished a disappointing 10th place in La Liga.  Despite his clubs poor form David Villa still managed to score an amazing 22 goals in just 40 appearances and also helped the National team to European glory.  He was on the wish lists of many top European clubs.  David Villa was let down by the team around him last season and no one would have blamed him if he moved to Real Madrid or Barcelona.  However, David Villa had other ideas!

David Villa signed a new 6 year contract with Valencia which keeps him at the club until 2014.  He showed his loyalty to a club in turmoil.  If Valencia lost David Villa then the 08/09 season could follow the trends of the previous season.  David Villa is crucial to the Valencia team, he is the target man for the team and a 20 goal per season striker.

Villa’s loyalty shows that he is not in it for the money, he plays football because he loves it and he obviously loves playing for Valencia.  If he has to sacrifice Champions League football then that is obviously something he feels he has to do.  We should all praise David Villa for not taking the easy option, he could have gone to Real Madrid and made lots of money and would’ve done well… but instead he has opted to stay at Valencia

Valencia have shaped Villa into a world class player, as did Real Madrid with Robinho and also Manchester United with Cristiano Ronaldo.  However, Villa is the only one who feels that he owes his club his services.  Thank you David Villa for bringing some sense to a summer of madness!

Valencia never accepted an offer firstly. Secondly, at Madrid he wasn't guaranteed to be the first name on the team sheet, nor was he offered the freedom of the attack Hes got it all at Valencia, its not a love of the club but instead a love of money, power, and the 'lime-light'; hes the centre of attention at Valencia, hed be one of crowd at Real.

David Villa is arguably the best player in the world at the moment, look at his current form (7 goals in 5 league appearances). I'm sure he'd walk into the team, and if Villa went to Madrid I'm sure he'd get a decent sum, this is after all the same club who offered Ronaldo 300k per week. I'm sure they would've matched Valencia's offer. And your right, David Villa is the star of Valencia... but i'm sure you agree he has the potential to be the star of Madrid...but rightfully his loyalty for his team was larger than his ego

Arent these facts from the same person who said the spanish league is going down the plughole?! (7 goals in 5 games in La Liga is the equivalent of 1 in 20 in the premiership, according to your 'Real Catastophe', being that the Premiership is by far the stronger league).

Someones been reading too many newspapers, 300K a week was something that the NOTW or some other similar paper 'quoted' its all an exageration, you need to bring your head out of the clouds mate!

Madrid have never had, and will never a have a 'sinlge star' unrivaled in thier fame by any other member of the team. This is where the differenciation comes: Villa cant handle not being no.1, he needs to be the best paid and the most famous footballer in the team, of which he wouldnt be at Madrid. Football's about money and power, and at the moment, with his great show of 'loyalty' he has both at Valencia CF...
