When Sir Bobby Robson stated that “The first 90 minutes are the most important” he did not realise his words would go down in history, nor become the motto for our online football magazine with the site titled around his humorous answer.
Sir Bobby is a living legend in the football world. The former England, Newcastle and Ipswich manager has also won trophies in the Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch leagues respectively. Robson most recently occupied the role of football consultant for the Irish national team, as well as continuing in his role as honoury president of Ipswich FC. Throughout his lifetime unfortunately Sir Bobby has repeatedly been diagnosed with cancer and after defeating the disease on numerous occasions, has admitted recently the fight may be over, “I am going to die sooner rather than later. But then everyone has to go sometime and I have enjoyed every minute.” I was extremely fortunate to be able to meet the Tyneside icon, who also guided the England national team to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup. Despite a lifetime in the harsh world of football Sir Bobby remains a charming gentleman who is a credit to “the beautiful game.” As mentioned previously on TF90M, we encourage you to support Sir Bobby’s foundation, more details about it can be found at http://www.sirbobbyrobsonfoundation.org.uk/.
