In the Championship Doncaster stunned Derby 1-0. The recently relegated team travel to Ashton Gate next match in the hope of picking up three points and showing they are promotion candidates against Bristol City who themselves managed a late win versus Blackpool.
Some large score lines came with Sheffield Wednesday defeating Burnley 4-1 and Oldham coming from behind to beat Millwall 4-3. The biggest thrashing of the opening weekend was Dagenham and Redbridge’s 6-0 demolishment of Chester.
In Scotland both Rangers and Celtic opened their campaigns with wins as the two look to compete again for the title.
The Community Shield was decided on penalties after the match finished 0-0. Manchester United came out victorious after Portsmouth missed three out of their four penalties.
Next weekend will see the unveiling of the 2008/09 Premiership season.
