With under a month to the close of the summer transfer window, the rumours regarding the transfer merry-go-round are rife. With the story’s regarding Arsenal’s Adebayor and Fabregas now seemingly finished business, the majority of the gossip is circling around the other team in North London.
Since Juande Ramos’s takeover at Tottenham it was presumed he would make his mark on the squad and mould it into his own. The purchases of Luka Modric, Giovani Dos Santos and David Bentley have already displayed his attacking ambitions for the new campaign. The capture of Brazilian keeper Heurelho Gomes remains the club’s only defensive move; and then even Gomes is a former striker. Whilst the side have splashed out over £50 million, there seems no sign of stopping for Ramos.
Having also sold star striker Robbie Keane to Liverpool, as well as squad players Teemu Tainio, Steed Malbranque and Pascal Chimbonda to Roy Keane’s Sunderland, chairman Daniel Levy has been reimbursed for his expenditure. Although Levy will only be happy when the lilywhites gatecrash the top four party and became a Champions League club. To do this involves keeping their best players which certainly involves Bulgarian Dimiter Berbatov.
However with the often sulky forward seemingly determined to switch sides, the newspaper columnists have provided many suggestions for attacking replacements. If “The Sun” is to be believed Tottenham will replace Berbatov with the Euro 2008 golden boot winner, David Villa. The reported £32 million swoop will make the Spaniard the most expensive signing ever by a British side.
Another story revolving around Spurs is where the Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin will end up. With Zenit St Petersburg holding out for an excessive transfer fee, rumours had died down regarding his switch to N17, although various sources report today the move may be back on with Arshavin’s agent still trying to make the move happen. Fellow Russian star Roman Pavlyuchenko was said to have rejected a move to play for the Spurs and Diego Milito’s move to London has also gone quiet. With less than two weeks before kick-off, Ramos will need to attract the stars fast. One certainty is that Tottenham will be an exciting team to watch this season.
