Top 5 Keeper Goals
Football Culture
Written by James Bailey

Some of the most notable moments in football history have come from goalkeepers defying their usual job and bagging a goal at the other end of the pitch. TF90M has selected its favourite five keeper goals and you can view them below.

5. Peter Schmeichel

The giant Danish keeper holds the record for the best clean sheets-to-games ratio in the Premiership. Standing at 6 ft 4, he also posed an aerial threat in the opposition area. During the Champions League final in 1999, he came forward, causing confusion in the penalty area which subsequently led to a great Man United comeback. He scored a goal for Aston Villa in the Premier league and also this one here for Man United.

4. Paul Robinson

Having scored for Leeds United, Robinson added another goal to his tally when he surprised everybody, including opposition keeper Ben Foster, with his 93 yards strike. Robinson took a free-kick from just outside his own area and the ball bounced over the head of the Watford goalkeeper and into the goal.

2. Jose Luis Chilavert

The Paraguayan keeper, not short of controversy, became world renowned for his set piece expertise. Chilavert won the “World’s Best Goalkeeper” award in 1995, 1997 and 1998 but will be more fondly remembered for his 62 goals, many of them crucial including the eight he scored for his nation.

1. Jimmy Glass

Nothing short of a fairy tale was Jimmy Glass’s goal. On loan at Carlisle, the team needed to win their last game of the season to stay in the English football league. With a mere 10 seconds remaining on the clock and the score line stuck at 1-1, the keeper came up for a corner and what would be the last chance on goal. Remarkably Glass managed to scrap the ball into the opposition’s net and keep Carlisle up. Cue celebrations and ecstasy in the commentary box.

So… deep, deep, deep, I make it sixty seconds. Jimmy Glass knocks it long. It comes now to Bagshaw. Bagshaw back to Anthony. Up to Stevens… and the ball goes out now for a corner to Carlisle United – will they have time to take it? Referee looks at his watch… and here comes Jimmy Glass! Carlisle United goalkeeper Jimmy Glass is coming up for the kick – everyone is going up... there isn’t one player in the Carlisle half! Well, well… and the corner kick comes in… and… the goalkeeper’s punch… oh… Jimmy Glass! Jimmy Glass! Jimmy Glass, the goalkeeper, has scored a goal for Carlisle United! There’s a pitch invasion! There is a pitch invasion! The referee has been swamped – they’re bouncing on the crossbar!”
