Introduced as England’s “Greatest ever goal scorer”, Jimmy Greaves- the former Spurs and Chelsea forward- took to the stage in front of a full Weston Playhouse. After his illustrious playing career spanning 22 years, Greaves has become synonymous with after dinner speeches and tours. His personality familiar with the public following his successful television partnership with Ian St. John, many were in the audience not just to see a former great footballer but also a great comedian. Despite exhibiting a rounder figure now, the London lad delighted the audience with his numerous jokes, tales and anecdotes. Declaring Peter Beardsley and Ian Dowie as the ugliest men among the Beautiful Game duly brought rasps of laughter. His retelling of memorable clashes with Ron “chopper” Harris endeared Greaves to the crowd. His subject Harris who had previously supported him on tours was replaced with World Cup winner Martin Peters. Still in great shape, the ex-West Ham man told his story of the renowned Sixty Six success and his delight at scoring in that unforgettable final. After the interval, questions were posed at the two legend speakers. The main question however is why is this country not producing entertainers on and off the field such as these two?
